By far, one of the greatest joys of motherhood is watching your children grow into their personalities. All those subtle quirks they shared as toddlers are now full-blown personality traits that scream to the world “There’s nobody quite like me!”

Unfortunately, as our little ones pass into the no-man’s land of the teen years those screams are muffled by the need to “fit in.” Seemingly overnight the joy of standing out is replaced with the joy of standing in line. As a mom, this breaks my heart. I would much rather have my son enter his high school years still wearing his cape and mustache then see him conform to the latest fad desperately hoping to fit in.

As I chatted and reminisced with a girlfriend while giggling at my son’s antics, she brought up the topic of bullying. “Don’t you worry he’ll get picked on?”

In our day and age this is certainly a valid concern. Hardly a day passes that we aren’t heartbroken by headlines chronicling a teens suicide at the hands of bullying. The tough times of being a teenager have only gotten tougher as bullying goes high-tech with smartphones and social media.

All things considered, YES. I still think it’s vital that we encourage our children to non-conform and embrace their individuality. Not so they’re a target, but so they may be a voice a reason. In a crowd of sheep, they will the leader that says “enough is enough.” If we encourage our children to think for themselves and resist the mob-mentality of cliques, they will be far less likely to stand by in silence. They can free think and act accordingly, potentially persuading a few others in the process. One person CAN make a difference.

If we hope to break the silence of bullying, we must teach our children to stand up and stand out.

In the aftermath of the Super Bowl social media has been abuzz debating GoDaddy’s controversial ads. Their hot girl/nerd guy make out session garnered mass publicity and made them rich. According to GoDaddy, they gained 10,000 new customers in the wake of the commercial. This wasn’t just a “little bump” for them, it was their biggest sales day in history.

How is this possible? They angered every female in America with that ad? Easy. They’re the bully in the room with all the connections. As annoying as their commercials are, they get us talking and EVERYONE remembers their name. It’s basic human nature. We love train wrecks. We never forget the people who p*ss us off, but have a hard time remembering those who were “nice.”

GoDaddy knows this all too well and bet the farm on being controversial and memorable versus sweet and poignant. Ram may have preached “God Made a Farmer“, but GoDaddy made a sale. The almighty dollar wins and we’re once again reminded sex sells.

I could go on for hours about why I personally hated the commercial, but I’ll save the rant. I think we’re making a mistake by giving GoDaddy so much credit. GoDaddy did not create the hypersexualization of women, nor the stereotype that women are nothing more than arm candy in the tech world. They simply made a Super Bowl ad perpetuating the stereotype. Attacking the messenger won’t change the message.

If you were truly angered by the ad, DO SOMETHING about it? And no, I don’t mean boycott GoDaddy. I mean prove the stereotype WRONG. Change the message. It starts with one little girl, then another. Before long, the “bimbo” stereotype will fade away. BUT you have to take the first step. Let that first step start in YOUR home.

For those who might not know her yet, let me introduce you to Amanda Todd. A girl from a small town that matters in a big way.

This little girl matters because her story serves as a chilling example of how bullying can forever silence the light in our young girls. What makes her story so chilling is the realization that this could happen to any girl, at anytime, from anywhere.

She was simply a sweet young girl trying to navigate the troubled waters of her teenage years. Unfortunately, her one mistake led to years of torture and humiliation that not even her parents could protect her from.

Please watch the video below to as Amanda explains her story. While we will never fully know the heartache this poor girl endured, her courage speaks volumes.

For me, what makes this story so tragic is that I can see how the situation unfolded so easily. Any mom can look back into her teen years and relate to Amanda. While our decisions and reactions may have differed, we faced those same pressures. These days, however, our girls are being sexualized at even younger ages, dealing with bullying not just in person but online, and finding it even more difficult to get attention from their time-strapped parents.

The harsh reality is that as our involvement in social media increases, our interpersonal skills such as empathy decrease. This is not just speculation, but fact. Recent research presented at the Association for Psychological Science conference found that college students are 40% less empathetic than their counter parts 30 years ago. The research shows the sharpest drop in empathy occurring over the last 9 years. I hardly find it a coincidence that exactly 9 years ago MySpace made its debut, followed quickly by Facebook and the many other social networking sites.

Amanda Todd’s story is the face of those statistics. Our young girls are under attack online and often at the hands of other young girls who are just as troubled and vulnerable. In desperate attempts for attention, social media is turning into a battle ground for our teens. As parents, I believe we need to protect our girls from these threats online just as vigorously as we would offline. Social media and texting isn’t always as innocent as we’d like to believe and needs our supervision, vigilance, and discussion.

Our best defense in preventing another tragedy like Amanda’s is communication with our young girls.

It is our responsibility to let them know they are NOT alone.

As the Jennifer Livingston of WKBT video goes viral, I feel its the perfect time to share some bullying signs to help you identify if your child is being bullied. If you haven’t already, I urge you to watch the video below and comment. I’d love to hear your take!

Bullying is intentional, aggressive behavior toward an individual by another. This behavior is actually an imbalance of power that causes the aggressor to experience a false sense of empowerment and the victim feeling powerless. The effects of bullying are evident by various physical and behavioral signs and symptoms.

There are various types of bullying that people need to be aware of. Unfortunately, bullying is very prevalent among children today and can have serious negative effects for the young people who are bullied.

To successfully help children, who are victims of bullying, it is important for adults to recognize these displays, especially in young children. Some children may experience one or all of them.

Bullying can be categorized into four types:

1. Physical – Physical bullying can include any unwanted physical contact such as hitting, punching, pinching, and cutting.

2. Verbal – Verbal bullying can include teasing and name-calling.

3. Non-verbal/emotional – Emotional bullying can include eye and finger gestures, exclusion from social gatherings, and intimidation.

4. Cyber - Cyber bullying is when children receive harassing or threatening messages via phone (text message or other), emails, or other technological methods.

Most children who are being bullied do not voice their dilemma, therefore, adults need to know how to spot the signs and symptoms of a bullied child. In this way, they will be better able to help their children to not remain bullying targets. Influential adults may also help them to overcome the negative effects that could scar them for the rest of their lives.

The following are some common signs and symptoms that bullying targets display.

1. The bullied child often appears sad, depressed, and moody, cries easily, or is easily upset. Changes could be gradual or sudden, but in any event, attention should be given to the changes.

2. The bullied child often isolate themselves from others and do not care to participate in activities. They have no circle of friends, or if children are known to be sociable, but they are beginning to withdraw, it could be that they are avoiding rejection by their peers.

3. The bullied child may have lost interest in school or other social gathering with peers and, as a result, often makes excuses to not attend.

4. The bullied child may come home with visible injuries such as bruises, cuts, and scrapes. These physical marks could be signs of altercations with other children. In most cases, bullied children are afraid to fight back, either because they feel helpless or because they have been taught not to fight back.

5. The child comes home with torn clothes, missing personal items such as school books, or destroyed belongings. These signs could also be as a result of fights and other intimidating activities that render some children helpless.

6. Bullied children often complain of being sick with headaches or stomach aches. Children often use these complaints as excuses because such complaints cannot be easily proven or may not be disputed by parents.

7. The bullied child’s eating habits may have changed. They may have lost their appetite or binge eat.

8. Bullied children often perform poorly in school. Due to emotional distress, children may lack the ability to concentrate on their work.

9. The bullied child may display unexplainable anxiety, have trouble sleeping, or experience nightmares regularly. These experiences could be due to emotional distress and anxiety that play out during the night.

10. Bullied children often suffer from low self-esteem and low self-confidence.

11. Bullied children often appear nervous. Nervous conditions could result when they don’t know what to expect on a daily basis.

As the CEO of glamLIFE Brands for the past nine years I’ve gotten lots of start-up questions. While the details differ, it’s always the same question:

How do I not F* it up???

At the end of the day, that’s really what it all boils down to. How do we succeed in business?

Since we’re keeping things simple here, I have a very simple answer: Trust your instincts.

I can honestly tell you, the only times I’ve made a true screw-up with my business has been when I didn’t trust my instincts.

Case & Point: Fall 2007, our sales were skyrocketing and I needed to scale quickly. I was overwhelmed and unsure how to handle it all. In desperation, I opted to take in the advice of seasoned “experts” in my field. Their advice?

Build your operations for where your company will be five years from now, not where it is today.

The “you’ll grow into it” approach. In particular, this meant investing in a costly enterprise management system designed for complex transactions and much larger corporations. My instincts begged to differ. I felt I should focus on building operational stepping stones to handle the potential growth, not just assume it as a given. However, the fancy new system was deliciously tempting. It had all the bells and whistles I needed, a flashy dashboard that reminded me of a stealth bomber cockpit, and I certainly felt like one of the “big boys” when I mentioned my new set-up. I could be BIG TIME! “This” could SOLVE all my problems, right???

With the experts pushing and the sales team dragging me, I finally signed on the bottom line and pulled the trigger.

I was officially $25K lighter.

As the ink dried my stomach turned. That sinking feeling quickly stung as I was slapped up side the head with buyer’s remorse. Sigh. I forced myself to “give it a chance” and tried to embrace the change with an open mind. I convinced myself it was for the best and that I would “make sure I got my money’s worth.”

That optimism soon faded as the recession engulfed the economy and my sales plummeted. By the time I had even figured out how to use the new software, I had already lost half of my customers to bankruptcy. I was forced to acknowledge what I knew all along, the system was a naive and knee-jerk reaction to normal business growing pains.

Fast forward: I managed to survive the blunder by liquidating excess inventory, scaling back overhead, and creating a lower priced offering to reach new customers. While I survived the year, I certainly didn’t thrive and my profit margins took the hit.

All in all, it was a valuable lesson learned. Never again would I ignore my instincts.

Bottom line: You know your business and yourself better than any “expert”.

Some seem more innocent than others and decisions made on the fly can often come back to haunt you. Such decisions include what your title and designation might be.

Do you call yourself: Founder, Owner, Proprietor, Entrepreneur, CEO, Head Designer, Creator??? Think fast because titles mean more than you could ever imagine.

Bottom line: How you define yourself is exactly how the world will define you.

Sure you might “own” your business, but do you really OWN it? If you’re still calling yourself “Founder”, the answer is No. If you want others to see the value in your company, you must see it first. Hiding behind lackluster titles such as “Founder” convey a lack of conviction and prevent you from being taken seriously. Tune in as explain in detail the differences and share my own personal story with OWNing it…

To be perfectly clear. YES. I’m one of those crazy idealists that believes in personal accountability. You know…that little voice in your head that whispers,

“it’s your own damn fault.”

Well, I actually listen to it. As much as those words torture my conscience like nails on a chalkboard, I still need them.

Why? Because they are a raw, yet poetic reminder that I am the master of my own fate.

I’m not the victim in this story- I’m the hero.

We all have crosses to bear, heartaches to mend, and failures to overcome.

That’s the beauty of life. Without the lows we would never truly appreciate the highs. Its that simple. However, I also know that’s easier said than done. Especially when you’re in the throws of an epic failure that forces you to question your very being.

Do me a favor though…instead of giving into those feelings of helplessness as your world unravels…

Deep Breath

Don’t let yourself get carried out to sea by the waves of panic. Take time to center yourself by stepping out of the situation, taking a breather, and finding a release. This could be journaling, running a few laps, or even escaping into a good movie. Whatever it takes, you need to decompress. Constantly rewinding the torment won’t help you fast forward through it. It does nothing more than sap your strength and rob you of clarity.

Be Honest

Was this really “your own damn fault?” Take emotion out of the situation and have a heart to heart with yourself. The more realistic you can be about confronting the obstacle, the easier it will be to overcome and avoid in the future. If you’re asking yourself, “Why does everyone take advantage of me?” you need to be honest with yourself and acknowledge that the common denominator in that scenario is YOU. What role are you unwittingly playing in all this? After all, the easiest way to change the world is to start with yourself.

Take Control

Personal accountability is a beautiful thing in that it gives us complete control over our destiny. You are the HERO in the story of YOU. How would you like it to read? If you want a happy ending, you must save yourself. Take back control and brainstorm what you can do TODAY to make yourself stronger tomorrow. There is nothing more empowering than knowing you can dig yourself out of your own ditch. To look adversity straight in the eye and tell it to piss off. You’ve got this. Baby steps count and all that matters is that you’re putting one foot in front of the other. Start walking.

I was moving into a new house and knee deep in boxes and the usual chaos. The day seemed simple enough.

I had just brought in another load when a friend called frantically asking if I had heard about “the plane that flew into the trade center.” Instantly my heart went out, poor guy!

I assumed an innocent small airplane pilot had lost control and mistakenly flew into the buildings. As I considered weather conditions, faulty instruments, or even- worse yet- a suicide attempt, I said a silent prayer for his family and hoped no one else was hurt.

“No Heather! It was a BIG plane! They think it might be terrorists!” I was dumbfounded, why would terrorists do that? HOW could they do that? It made no sense? As I finally found access to the news the blood curdling images came flooding in.

Women and children running down the smoke filled streets eyes full of terror. Grown men weeping uncontrollably crouched down next to the rumble. The piercing screams of the ambulance and fire truck sirens. The aftermath was beyond overwhelming and seemed so surreal.

It just didn’t make sense?

Like everyone else, I was transfixed to the news and anxious for any tidbit that would help me understand. Those tidbits never came, and as the death toll rose so did my fears for my country and my children’s safety. Is this the world we live in?

My only consolation was hearing the stories of the heroes that bravely rushed in when everyone else was rushing out. How the passengers of Flight 93 willingly gave their lives to spare others. The men and women that enlisted to fight back against the terrorists. Seeing how our country rallied together to protect our freedom against these unspeakable threats was empowering.

It is only during adversity that we learn our true strength. September 11th is no different. “We will never forget” that symbolic day as it serves as a badge of our country’s courage.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those we lost and heartfelt condolences to the families whose lives were changed forever. God Bless.

Remember that little past time your husband and you used to share before the kids, work struggles, PTA meetings, caring for aging parents, and all the other chaos we endure on a daily basis in our overstressed lives?

Exactly. We get so caught up in being “mommy” and “daddy” we forget those blessings grew from us being “husband” and “wife”. But how can we expect those blossoms to grow up beautiful and strong if we don’t cultivate the soil they call home?

A loving marriage is the foundation for family, children are an expression of that love, career supports that love, and interests outside the home cultivate the marriage by providing opportunities to strengthen the bond.

It’s impossible to address work/life balance issues without emphasizing the importance of a happy and healthy marriage. Regardless of how beautiful your “home” is, a crack in the foundation will be costly later on.

So how do we strengthen that foundation?

Make Time

If you want a happy home, kids, career, outlook, get back into newlywed mode and make time with your loved one priority one. Play together, dream together, and SLEEP TOGETHER. Bedtime rituals aren’t just important for making kids feel loved and nurtured, they work wonders for couples as well. Never miss an opportunity to snuggle with your spouse and reconnect after a long, hard day.

Be Grateful

While in survival mode, the little things we once appreciated in our partners slowly become expectations. Instead of being grateful for what DOES get done, we’re annoyed by what DOESN’T. Shift your mindset and look for opportunities to praise your relationship, spouse, and family. When life gets hectic and tempers flare, take a deep breath and remind yourself why you married him in the first place. I guarantee you it wasn’t because he never left the toilet seat up.

Define Love

The desire to show love is a beautiful gesture, but easily lost in translation. What makes us feel “loved” can vary greatly leaving a husband and wife feeling like they’re speaking different languages. Instead of playing guessing games, ASK! A heartfelt, “What can I do to make you feel loved?” could open a whole new level of intimacy for you and your partner. If you want the relationship to meet your emotional, psychological, and physical needs, you must be open and honest about sharing them.

Join in! Do you believe its possible to balance kids, career, AND marriage?

All too often we trap ourselves in relationships, partnerships and commitments that no longer serve us. The friend that’s quick to take, but never gives. The business partner who nods in agreement, but undermines behind closed doors. The dreaded weekly commitment you still honor even though its diverted from your beliefs months ago.

We daydream of letting go, but never do. Not because we can’t, but because we won’t. Unfortunately, emotional shackles are much harder to shake than the shiny metal ones. So how do know when the time is right to let go?

The Relationship is Toxic

Is the relationship doing more damage than good? We all have a cross to bear and struggles to face on our own. If you’re constantly juggling your own dramas PLUS those of a friend, you’re just slowly killing yourself. Humans are relational beings and strife in our relationships take a significant toll on our well-being. Take a look at the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale, the top 3 stressful events in life ALL relate to our social lives. They include death of a spouse, divorce and marital separation. Personal injury and illness is down at number 6. Don’t get me wrong, relationships take work and I’m all for second chances. However, if the relationship is consistently negative, abusive and draining it might be time to hit the door.

You’re Constantly Editing Yourself

Personal and professional relationships need to be based on mutual respect and acceptance. You may not always agree with your colleague, but you should at least respect their viewpoint. If you’re having a hard time supporting their ideas, goals or aspirations consider parting ways. Change can be scary and we have a tendency to cling to situations that no longer serve us. However, if you’re constantly editing your conversations, holding back on your true passions and candy coating viewpoints- who is benefiting? Neither one of you. You’re simply delaying the inevitable by sacrificing your true purpose and misleading them in the process. That’s hardly a win/win scenario. Part ways while things can still be amicable.

The Feeling Isn’t Mutual

Relationships are about give and take. Rarely ever is that give and take exactly 50/50. It’s usually more like 90/10 some days and 40/60 others. And that’s okay? But if your entire relationship is in the 90/10 zone you desperately need to re-evaluate. It’s easy to fall into the trap of helping someone in need with good intentions, but your relationship shouldn’t have that same dynamic years later. If you’re constantly giving, you’ll end up nowhere but EMPTY. The relationship “well” needs to be replenished for it to maintain a healthy flow about it. If you’re being drained dry, cut your losses and let go.

You’re Living in the Past

Ask yourself, “Is this person making me happy, helping me grow?” Go beyond yes or no and jot down specific instances. How many of those moments are recent and how many are rooted in the past? While its commendable your BFF helped you move 5 years ago, that act doesn’t justify the relationship these days especially when you’ve been dodging her for months. Stop torturing yourself over a perceived indebtedness and cut the cord. And why not take the high road while you’re at it? Join her for coffee, give a small token of appreciation, and a heartfelt thank you (yet again) for the kindness she displayed years ago. She’ll appreciate the gesture and you’ll unlock the emotional shackles that have been draining you.

You Feel Insecure

This one is a toughie. We need to surround ourselves with people that we admire, encourage us to be a better person, and ultimately help us grow. Out of respect for their accomplishments, we may feel slightly insecure. Perfectly normal. However, if the person is making your feel inadequate or off-balance, that’s a completely different story. You know the type. Their words are encouraging but their actions lacking. The compliments usually end with a “but…” And they’re experts at congratulating you in one breath, but taking you down a notch in the next. “That’s awesome you made a $1 million sale! …but too bad it wasn’t $2 million like so-and-so’s, better luck next time right? Great job tho…” Uh huh. Sound familiar? Run. Don’t walk.

I know exercises like this aren’t easy. No one wants to hurt feelings or to have their feelings hurt. But sometimes letting go is the best thing for both parties? Know your worth and don’t settle for relationships that aren’t honoring that value. Respect yourself enough to let go.

Drink for a Cause" width="300" height="300" />I’m a sucker for a good Pinot Noir. Especially after a long, hard day playing SuperMOM. Early mornings, shuttling kids, work demands, squeezing in a quick workout, whipping up a healthy meal, cuddle time, you know how it goes. Mommy NEEDS wine.

Nothing beats curling up on the couch with a yummy glass of wine to celebrate the little victories of the day. As much as I love wine though, I’m no expert. I take the typical “stroll the grocery aisle, grab what stands out, and hope for the best” approach to wine selection.

Needless to say, I was a bit giddy when Martin Cody of Cellar Angels reached out and offered to send over some Pinots he knew I’d love. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, he shared more about his company and their mission. The Cellar Angels Philosophy: “We love wine. We love introducing others to great wine and we love helping others.” Music to my ears!

How It Works

Martin and the team at Cellar Angels hand-select the best wines from small and lesser known wineries throughout the Napa Valley and introduce them to the world. By joining as a free member, you have the option of buying the current offering at a ridiculously low member-only price. Great wine at a great price, it can’t get better than that right? But it can! A portion of the sale goes towards funding a handful of charities they support. The list is here.

What I Love

I love the feeling that I have a friend explaining all the details of the wine to me, I’m not just “buying alcohol”, I’m getting a valuable education in wine.

Each wine presented includes information about the family running the winery, complete with a video of them sharing their passions. It feels good to know your purchase helps another family live their dreams. As a small business owner myself, this one hits home.

Cellar Angels goes the extra mile and even includes a delicious recipe for you to make that perfectly pairs with your wine selection. Gourmet made easy- love it!

Next time mommy needs wine, why not stop by and visit the good-hearted folks at Cellar Angels? You’ll be happy you did! Tell them glama sent ya <img src='http://glamalife.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt="icon wink Mommy Needs Wine?

The blessing/curse of many mom entrepreneurs is that we are accidental entrepreneurs. We took the “necessity is the mother of invention” route to starting up our small businesses. We weren’t seasoned CEO’s or sales rockstars that decided to go solo. We are more commonly bootstrappers and self-taught marketers.

What else do mom entrepreneurs have in common? We’re not the best sales women. It’s not for lack of skills, but lack of “how to sell” training. Our background isn’t putting together compelling sales sheets, knocking out 8 hours/daily of cold calls, or pros at stalking decision makers.

For those of you looking for how to sell advice that gives you a competitive edge without turning you into a used car salesman, here are my tips.

Make Yourself Visible

Image via CrunchBase

Who are you trying to sell to? Find their name, company info, location and build a “buyer profile”. Once you find this info you can track them down in social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Make yourself known by re-tweeting them, commenting on their blog posts, joining linked in discussions and support their efforts. Your interest and generosity will be noted and they may potentially reach out to you if they see synergy.

Be consistent in your efforts and only attempt a sales pitch AFTER they have joined in a few online conversations with you. I think of it as a “meet me halfway” approach to business development and mom entrepreneurs are naturals at this. Nobody wants to feel bombarded by a complete stranger spewing a desperate sales pitch. Take the time to build a relationship first and it will be perceived as you reaching out to “help them”. That’s win/win in the how to sell world, your ideal scenario for generating loyal customers.

Learn From The Media

Generating publicity and building relationships with the media is critical to your small businesses success. I wrote about his in detail here: Why Publicity Matters for Mom Entrepreneurs. A major bonus is the valuable lesson it can teach you about how to sell. Once you secure a glowing review, analyze the piece. How did they present your company? What benefits did THEY chose to highlight? What was the reader response?

This can give you valuable clues about what you should be including in your sales pitches and marketing collateral. We’re too involved with the day-to-day of our business to see the big picture. It can be enlightening when a fresh pairs of eyes take note and point out features/benefits you took for granted.

Encourage Customers to Find Your Leads

This how to sell tip is common sense. We all KNOW this is a good idea, but few of us actually use this strategy to our advantage. To build a recommendation engine into your lead generating efforts incorporate incentives for your existing customers.

A couple suggestions to get you started: include a “15% discount for referrals” promotion in your email blast, add a “forward to a friend” link to your online presence, pack a “friends and family” coupon in shipments for customers to hand out, encourage “shares” in social media, contests that reward re-tweets, add an “I’m never too busy for your referrals” button at the bottom of your email signature, and cross promote with other mom entrepreneurs. All of these methods add up and will give you a well of warm leads for your business to tap into.

Kids have a way of pushing our buttons, especially when we’re already overwhelmed by family life. We’re barely hanging in there and -of course- this is the when our toddler decides to throw a bag of flour at his brother. Sigh. Unfortunately, being a mom doesn’t give you superpowers to resist frustration. We all have moments where we hit that last straw and lose it a little bit screaming at our kids. While it might feel nice for those 2 seconds to feel like they’re finally hearing us, that feeling of relief is soon replaced with guilt, helplessness, and sadness. We feel bad, they feel even worse, and nobody wins. So how do you keep your cool when you feel your blood start to boil?

Tune in for mom to mom tips to help you stop screaming at your kids…

Know Your Triggers:

If you find yourself screaming every time you help your 1st grader with elementary school homework, stop screaming and hire a tutor. You’ll BOTH be happier.

Have a Plan:

If your infant hasn’t had a nap all day, don’t expect them to patiently tag along while you stroll the grocery store for 3 hours. Plan ahead and make sure baby is well rested when you need her on best behavior.

Have An Outlet:

Don’t wait until your ready to explode! Have an outlet for releasing all that pent up tension so you don’t “lose it” in a “last straw” situation. Be proactive and make stress relief an item on your daily to-do list.

Ask for Help:

Nobody said you have to do it alone and we ALL have bad days. It’s OK! If you feel yourself at your wits end, enlist help and take some time for yourself to recharge. You’ll be a better parent for it.

Do YOU have some strategies to share? What helps you cool down when you feel your blood start to boil?

It’s just ONE step. Deep breath. Please try?” I can see the fear in his eyes as he takes a second. This is THE moment. I’m on pins and needles. Will he chose a shot at victory or accept defeat?

He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath as he summons his courage. An instant later those tears of terror have turned to tears of joy as he’s grinning ear to ear. Victory is his, he made the step!

“You did it!!! You beat your record! Way to go honey!” I’m basking in my proud mama moment, but he’s basking in an even greater one. He’s just realized he has far more potential than he ever dreamed.

The beauty of that moment wasn’t about rock climbing skills, it was about GRIT. We all have a voice in our head that tells us to move forward when we think we can’t, but not everyone listens. Those who do are rewarded greatly for they have discovered the secret ingredient to success. Those who don’t find themselves lost in the shuffle of mediocre wondering what they missed. Without grit, all the intelligence and resources in the world don’t matter.

Grit is the glue that holds us to our goals, dreams, and purpose.

If grit is a success factor for kids as studies point out, what can we do to encourage that personality trait in our kids? For starters, we need to get past the mantra of “do your best.” While it has good intentions, it serves as a free pass to settle for “good enough.” Instead of “do your best”, why not accept the mantra of “challenge yourself”?

After all, what’s the worst that can happen? As in the case with my son’s rock climbing, worst case is that he confirmed his suspicion. He couldn’t do it. Hardly life ending and he still would have felt good about himself for trying.

Now what is the BEST that could happen? He achieves what he once considered impossible and a door of possibility is opened wide. A door he’s ready to walk through with his head held high.

Call me crazy, but I think the rewards outweigh the risks here. If we never push our kids to achieve their highest potential, how can we expect them to truly step into their greatness?

“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.”

– Robert F. Kennedy

I call it an “art” because its not as easy as you might think. It takes skill, practice, and discipline -all commodities in short supply with our time-strapped lifestyles. We’re so overwhelmed these days our minds are in perpetual motion to nowhere.

Work for the sake of work. Communicating with people thousands a miles away while ignoring those 5 feet away. Reaching out to new prospects only to ignore the loyal customers we already have.

So how did we get so busy? Easy. We let the line blur. We gave up our boundaries. We subconsciously adopted a 24/7 lifestyle because we somehow thought it might be “better”.

We hoped to fill the nagging void in our work, personal lives, or both. We walked down this path looking for happiness, but ended up insatiable and still unhappy.

So what’s the missing puzzle piece? The magical key that will bring us happiness just standing still? This can only be answered by YOU.

If you’ve been chasing your “dream” for years and are still unhappy, stop for a second and ask yourself if that is really your dream? Or is it just a worthwhile distraction to keep you from dealing with the REAL issue?

If you’re looking for love, all the work in the world won’t fill that void. If you’re looking for approval from your parents, becoming President won’t cure your insecurities or suddenly deem you worthy. Sure these scenarios can help distract you from the reality and serve as an emotional band-aid. But you’re facing the inevitable, the band-aid will always have to come off.

Hate your job? Find a way out, change careers, down size to accommodate a simpler life doing what you LOVE. Disconnected from your kids? Make quality time with them a priority, open your heart and truly LISTEN to their needs. I guarantee you they would rather have a parent that takes time to play with them instead of the biggest house on the block.

Quit chasing after all the things that keep you “doing”

and find what makes you happy “being”.

When the fab ladies at Le Bebe Coo reached out to me to sample their line of bath and body for baby I jumped at the chance!

The line is wonderfully luxurious and perfect for moms AND baby. My daughter has sensitive skin and I remember very clearly all the headaches of trying to find a baby wash and diaper creme that didn’t irritate. I wish I would have known about Le Bebe Coo then!

As promised, here are my three favorites from the line…

Baby Lipstick

To put it simply? TO DIE FOR. I’m a lip moisturizer junkie and have tried just about every product out there. This “baby lipstick” was incredibly light, felt like satin on my lips, and had zero stickiness to it. Not to mention is did an amazing job of keeping my lips soft and supple throughout the day. No weird taste, a little goes a long way, and it even has a dash of sun protectant. I kept this goodie all to myself! (Click the pic for more info)

Baby Massage Oil

Another goodie perfect for moms! I adore this massage oil, but I cheated and I’m using it as a moisturizer. I usually apply a body oil after showers and before bed, but HATE how some are so heavy and greasy. This “massage oil” applies like a regular lotion, yet hydrates like a body oil- heavenly! As your body heats up during the night it absorbs all the goodness in the oil and your skin is remarkably soft in the morning. (Click the pic for more info)

Leave-in Conditioner for Hair

My daughter has beautiful long blonde hair- which is also hopelessly brittle, tangled, and prone to split ends. Using conditioner after a shampoo isn’t a nicety, but more a necessity. The only problem with that is she is also the queen of the 5 minute shower. Half the time she doesn’t rinse out all the conditioner which leaves her locks completely matted. That pretty much defeats the whole purpose of the conditioner in the first place. Sigh. Le Bebe Coo’s leave in conditioner is the perfect answer since its easy to spray on, takes 2 seconds and actually works! No more tangles, matting, and everyone’s happy! (Click the pic for more info)

The love affair started about fifteen years ago. I was flipping through the channels on late night television and stumbled across one of Felix Trinidad’s early fights. He was an amazing athlete full of unwavering determination, brute physicality, and an innate ability for overcoming obstacles.

It was no secret that he would often get knocked down within the first couple rounds of a fight. However, instead of letting it rattle him, he would only come back stronger and inevitably score a dramatic knock out victory over his opponent. You couldn’t help but cheer for him and he became an instant fan favorite. As I continued to watch his fights and boxing in general, I learned quite a few things that helped me in my journey through entrepreneurship.

Lesson #1: It’s Always the Punch You DON’T See That Knocks You Down

Although it may seem that boxers just get out there and brawl, the sport is actually based on tremendous science, research, and strategy. Trainers spend countless hours studying opponents so they can prepare their boxers to overcome any scenario that might come up in the ring. It’s always easier to respond to adversity when you’re not at the receiving end of a left hook. Instead of scrambling to react while half-dazed, you can just take a deep breath and execute plan B. This tactic works equally well for entrepreneurs battling bouts of adversity such as slowed sales, production disasters, or employee turmoil. In the infamous words of Mike Tyson, “everyone has a great plan until they get punched in the face.”

Lesson #2: “If it Doesn’t Make Dollars, it Doesn’t Make Sense.”

This quote is compliments of the notoriously flamboyant Floyd “Money” Mayweather. He’s one of the best pound for pound boxers in the sport and also one of the highest paid. His philosophy is simple, if there’s not enough money on the table for him to get in the ring-he walks. Entrepreneurs would be wise to adopt this mantra when writing their business plans, evaluating partnerships, and developing new products. If there’s not enough profit on the table to invest in a business, new product line, or partnership -keep walking. While his philosophy may seem overly simplistic, I do think its sound. Business success depends on your ability to bring in cash. Whether you use that money to fund your own bank account or a local charity, you still need the cash. Cash is King.

Lesson #3: Sometimes it’s More Important to Win Fans Than to Win Rounds

Clients and customers aren’t always logical. Just because your product is the best, fastest, cheapest out there, doesn’t mean they will love you. A great boxing example of this is “Winky” Wright. He is a veteran fighter with amazing technical boxing ability. He is also amazingly boring to watch. No matter how many titles he wins, no body wants to see him fight. The exact opposite of him is Arturo “Thunder” Gatti. He is a charismatic, big-hearted fighter that often hits the canvas in a bloody blaze of glory. Win or lose, it doesn’t matter. All that matters is fans are on their feet in awe of his courage. He’s the real-life “Rocky’ and fans are transfixed and endeared to him. While he’s not the better boxer, he is the one who sells stadium seats and gets the big paydays.

Pinterest is fueled by customer feedback

These exact principles play out in the business world daily. A company with an inferior product, but a great branding strategy can steal the market spotlight and amass oodles of raving fans. Their customers and clients are so endeared to them that they are willing to overlook the higher cost, increased downtime, or technical glitches. Instead of turning on the company when there’s a failure, the customers reach out to help lift them back up. This is any company’s dream, loyal, raving fans that are ultimately your best sales team. Take a lesson from “Thunder” Gatti, don’t just count how many rounds you win, count how many fans you have joining you on the journey.

So there you go, business and boxing are related on more levels than just tax evasion and Don King. We can learn valuable lessons regarding business strategy, profitable decision making, and how to recruit raving fans. These are core principles that can help take your company to the next level.

Next time you’re flipping through the channels and come across a fight, stop and watch a couple of rounds. You just might gain some inspiration for your next great business idea.

Intelligence Is Overrated: What You Really Need To Succeed

I encourage you to click on over and read it in its entirety, but if you’re time-strapped here’s the takeaways:

While we think of the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) as being the strongest indicator of success, it’s not the ONLY one.

Research carried out by the Carnegie Institute of Technology shows that 85 percent of your financial success is due to skills in “human engineering,” your personality and ability to communicate, negotiate, and lead. Shockingly, only 15 percent is due to technical knowledge.

Instead of exclusively focusing on your conventional intelligence quotient, you should make an investment in strengthening your EQ (Emotional Intelligence), MQ (Moral Intelligence), and BQ (Body Intelligence).

I couldn’t agree more. These more “touchy feely” success factors are what make or break people, products and brands. I bet you can think of a couple of examples from today’s headlines where charisma beat out smarts. Here’s why:

Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

Without this you’re nothing but another talking head. EQ is that little voice in our head that tells us to listen more than we talk, to look for the win/win when negotiating, and allows us to connect in an authentic way with our audience. To be a true leader you must score highly in this department.

Moral Intelligence (MQ)

This is what keeps word of mouth referrals coming, recommendations stacking up, and you “in demand”. Your MQ directly correlates with your level of credibility. The more credibility you have the more paying customers, invites to serve as an “expert”, and partnership offers with other highly reputable companies. The golden rule applies here, “Do unto others as you wish them to do unto you.”

Body Intelligence (BQ)

This is the realization that “charity begins at home.” If you want to save the world, you must save yourself first. Keep your stress in check, exercise more-drink less, and appreciate that some of your best ideas come after a well-deserved vacation. All the success in the world means nothing if you don’t have your health.

Bottom Line

It doesn’t matter how smart you are if nobody likes you, trusts you or you’re too sick to even make the meeting. The greatest ideas in the world fall silent if they can’t be communicated effectively. Sure you can hire a great spokesperson, but the trail will always lead back to YOU. If you come across like a greasy snake oil salesman on his deathbed all bets are off.

People “buy” from people- not IQ scores.

I would finally get the real world experience I desperately craved.

What I didn’t realize, however, was just how REAL it was going to be.

No coffee errands for me, each day was about personal struggles for quality of life.

My clients dealt with the harsh cruelties of schizophrenia, brain injury and mental retardation among others. As the medical coordinator, I worked with the team to analyze their needs regarding therapy and coordinated medical care. With the rehabilitation strategy in place, I then served as the liaison to family and evaluated progress.

I took my work to heart and often spent more time with them than my own family and friends. As we shared breakfast, lunch and dinner it was hard to not become attached and affected by their struggles. What I found most compelling about these stories was how critical WILL was to their success.

A client could be admitted with encouraging brain scans, strong financial support, access to the best medical care and still make very little progress. Therapy was a struggle, medications had little effect and eventually their condition plateaued leaving the team and family heartbroken.

I quickly learned there was a missing puzzle piece.

My first glimpse of that puzzle piece was at the hands of a client I’ll call “James”. He had survived a horrible car crash, but was left unable to speak, without short term memory, physically disabled and cognitively could not manage to even brush his teeth.

The medical reports were discouraging, insurance almost non-existent, and his only support was a devastated wife coming to terms with their shattered golden years. We created a rehabilitation strategy hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst.

As his care progressed, I was caught me off guard by how frustrated he became during therapy. Never annoyed by the therapists constant demands, but more so at his inability to answer those demands. I remember spying on one of his early therapies. The more agitated he became, the bigger I smiled.

He was going to FIGHT this.

He had the WILL to survive and was going to find the way. I wasn’t the only one who noticed and we rallied to push him harder each day. We didn’t focus on what he couldn’t do, but rather on building upon what he could. Within a year he was at home, self sufficient and had even started a small engine repair shop out of his garage. The progress James made dumbfounded us all and taught a rookie like me a valuable lesson.

As an entrepreneur, I see this same story play out daily but with different characters and plot lines. Companies with all the venture capital money in the world and a high powered board of directors that just slowly fade away. Then there are the “James” companies living on nothing but tenacity and ramen noodles that grab huge market share seemingly overnight.

You can do the same? The will to survive is one of the most primal instincts we have. Learn to harness that as you move forward in your business and you will be unstoppable. A world of possibility opens up when you stop focusing on what you can’t do and start focusing on what you can. Strive to build on those “cans” each day and you’ll be amazed at how far you can go.

If you have the will, there is ALWAYS a way.

This has become my new mantra and quite honestly, I wish I would have seen the light a little earlier. However, as a small business owner swamped with trying to make sales, market the business, oversee the day-to-day operations, and oh yeah- create the product, I just never saw where “having lunch” had a worthy place in my hectic day. How could mingling be a priority when I still had bills to pay?

With a little free time, I finally decided to join in on a couple happy hours and group dinners. After my first social with other entrepreneurs, I had found a new CPA, brainstormed with an ex-Neiman Marcus buyer on ideas for fine tuning my line, and found a new favorite wine. Not bad, plus I actually had a good time! Letting off some steam with fellow entrepreneurs who understood my situation was exactly what I needed to help me re-focus and re-energize.

Needless to say, I got the “networking” bug and have tried to incorporate some type of business mingling at least twice a month ever since. With the likelihood of continued tough times ahead of us, we all need a little help. Why not try to reach out to a couple of colleagues? Here are some ideas and tips to get you started networking like a pro:

Get social…

Visit networking sites like www.meetup.com for groups in your area that might be of interest.

Volunteer to help with organizations you believe in

Join local trade groups, the chamber of commerce, or even Toastmasters

Host a brunch/happy hour for parents in your child’s class

Coordinate a block party for your neighborhood or business park

Know the etiquette…

Listen twice as much as you talk… you’re not there to convert followers, you’re there to connect with others…

Leave the “hard sell” at home… the possibility of making a sale is an added bonus- not a necessity…

Have a plan… do you want advice on hiring a lawyer, feedback on your new tagline, or tips on negotiating a commercial lease? You’re more likely to accomplish your goals if you define them from the start

Remember the golden rule… help others make introductions when you see a good fit and they will happily do the same for you

Follow-up with referrals quickly and send thank you notes to the person who made the referral

Be consistent… showing up once every six months is not going to help you become the “go to” guy/gal

Does anyone else have tips or suggestions for getting started networking? I’d love to hear them!

So what’s better than ridiculously hip baby clothes for your pint-sized fashionista? A stylish and uber-functional designer diaper bag for mom!

After 8+ years of designing baby clothes, it’s about time Glamajama rocked the diaper bag world with our own line of totes for mom. And don’t worry, all my experience with diaper duty to 3 babies went into these. They’re baby-inspired AND mom-approved! Who says you can’t at least look glam when you’re dealing with not-so-glam diaper disasters?

What makes our diaper bags different:
