hero1 How to Overcome Failure in Life? Save Yourself. To be perfectly clear. YES. I’m one of those crazy idealists that believes in personal accountability. You know…that little voice in your head that whispers,

“it’s your own damn fault.”

Well, I actually listen to it. As much as those words torture my conscience like nails on a chalkboard, I still need them.

Why? Because they are a raw, yet poetic reminder that I am the master of my own fate.

I’m not the victim in this story- I’m the hero.

We all have crosses to bear, heartaches to mend, and failures to overcome.

That’s the beauty of life. Without the lows we would never truly appreciate the highs. Its that simple. However, I also know that’s easier said than done. Especially when you’re in the throws of an epic failure that forces you to question your very being.

Do me a favor though…instead of giving into those feelings of helplessness as your world unravels…

Deep Breath

Don’t let yourself get carried out to sea by the waves of panic. Take time to center yourself by stepping out of the situation, taking a breather, and finding a release. This could be journaling, running a few laps, or even escaping into a good movie. Whatever it takes, you need to decompress. Constantly rewinding the torment won’t help you fast forward through it. It does nothing more than sap your strength and rob you of clarity.

Be Honest

Was this really “your own damn fault?” Take emotion out of the situation and have a heart to heart with yourself. The more realistic you can be about confronting the obstacle, the easier it will be to overcome and avoid in the future. If you’re asking yourself, “Why does everyone take advantage of me?” you need to be honest with yourself and acknowledge that the common denominator in that scenario is YOU. What role are you unwittingly playing in all this? After all, the easiest way to change the world is to start with yourself.

Take Control

Personal accountability is a beautiful thing in that it gives us complete control over our destiny. You are the HERO in the story of YOU. How would you like it to read? If you want a happy ending, you must save yourself. Take back control and brainstorm what you can do TODAY to make yourself stronger tomorrow. There is nothing more empowering than knowing you can dig yourself out of your own ditch. To look adversity straight in the eye and tell it to piss off. You’ve got this. Baby steps count and all that matters is that you’re putting one foot in front of the other. Start walking.

  1. Terrific post, this has been something I write a lot about because I’ve battled the sense of being a failure a lot in my life, demanding more of myself, while finding that situations and circumstances aren’t quite like they should have been in the end. You’re absolutely right though Heather, when we sit back for a moment and take that deep breath, when we look around and we take accountability for our lives the potential for us to rise above and to realize that failure isn’t the end of our story but the beginning of a new chapter in our lives we have the potential to do more and to be more. We just have to realize that we are as strong and as in control as we let ourselves be and take those steps forward in faith, love and hope towards a better future, looking at our situation critically and learning from what we did wrong and what we did right so the next time around we can do what we need to do better. Anyways, again, great post.
